Crossgar student Mark McMullan has landed a leading role in a new production of a hit musical, after a touching video of him singing to his brother Declan, who suffers from locked-in syndrome, went viral.
The sensational YouTube clip of Mark singing Bring Him Home from the musical Les Misérables to Declan in a local pub was watched by thousands, with many famous faces including Louis Walsh, Russell Crowe, Alfie Boe and Gary Lightbody highlighting the online video.
Mark is now set to star in an amateur production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic Sunset Boulevard at the Grand Opera House in Belfast.
“Once the video sort of took off we just decided that we wanted to give back to everybody that had helped us and we thought the best way to do that was to do what we do best and do a musical for charity,” he told UTV.
Mark described how Declan feels about it all: “He thought it was great. It’s like a new-found fame for him and it just makes him feel like a celebrity and gives him more independence.”
“For me it’s just humbling. It’s a real privilege to do it for my brother.”
The new production of Sunset Boulevard is being produced by St. Patrick’s Choral Society and The Declan McMullan Fund, in aid of the Stuck For Words campaign, which helps the charities.
The show will run from Wednesday 7 October – Sunday 11 October at the Grand Opera House, Belfast.
