The Northern Ireland Young Solicitors Association (NIYSA) is bringing the prestigious ‘European Young Bar Association Spring Conference’ to Belfast on the 7-9 of April.

Having fought off opposition from other European organisations in their bid, the conference will come to Northern Ireland for only the third time, and will feature one of the world’s current highest profile lawyers in American Criminal Defence Attorney, Jerry Buting.

Mr Buting expressed his excitement about the forthcoming Belfast based event:

“Having dedicated my life to the legal profession, I am grateful to be able to attend such a wonderful event and help young lawyers in any way I can. I’m acutely aware of the challenges facing young lawyers in today’s world, so I’m always keen to pass on any useful advice I may have received over the years.
“Belfast is a wonderful city which has really progressed in recent years, and, in addition, I have family ties in Co.Antrim so I’m genuinely excited for the event and trip to Northern Ireland.”

Mr Buting also expressed the effect of the hit documentary series on young people’s interest in the law, explaining:

“The Stephen Avery case was exceptionally challenging and ultimately disappointing, however, the “Making a Murderer” documentary has captured the public imagination and has got many young people interested in the legal profession once more.”
The three day conference will commence on the 7 of April with a welcome reception at the Ivory Restaurant, Belfast. The main academic conference will take place at Ten Square Hotel on Friday the 8 of April with a full programme of social events over the weekend.

NIYSA Chair, Julie-Ann McCaffrey spoke of her delight ahead of the event:

“Having Jerry Buting on board as a guest speaker will add plenty of excitement to the event, so we hope for excellent support and turn out.

“The ‘Making a Murderer’ series was the first documentary of its kind to obtain international interest and provide a unique insight into court room trials. I have no doubt many attendees will be enthused at the prospect at hearing Jerry speak and asking questions on the notorious case.”

We reckon Jerry should stop by popular Belfast bar Avery’s (while he’s in the area), too.

With only a limited number available, prospective attendees are advised to move quickly to avoid disappointment.
