Sophie Ellis-Bextor said her love of books was nurtured by her television presenter mother, who encouraged her “to read hamburgers as well as steaks”.

The singer and mother of three, 36, said she was encouraged to read a variety of titles by her mother, Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis, during her childhood.

She told the Sunday Express’s S magazine: “I was always into reading and read a lot of books on holiday when I was seven or eight. I would easily read a book a day.

“I remember getting into these things called Point Horror – these silly thriller, horror books that were a series. I remember mum saying it was OK to read hamburgers, just try a few steaks too, so I tried to intersperse it with other things.”

The Murder On The Dancefloor singer said she would count Daphne du Maurier’s gothic classic Rebecca among her favourite books.
