On the eve of World Whisky Day tomorrow, one Northern Ireland whiskey lover is celebrating, having landed his dream job. And we’re seriously jealous!
Earlier this year, Dillon Bass – owners of the largest portfolio of leading Irish whiskey brands in Northern Ireland – launched a search for a new Powers Irish Whiskey Ambassador.
Over 50 people answered the call and after a competitive recruitment campaign, Joe Magowan from Belfast has been appointed.
Joe’s love affair with Irish whiskey began almost 10 years ago, when a part-time job set him on a path of discovery that’s responsible for him landing one of the most talked about jobs in Belfast.
The new Powers NI Brand Ambassador is a passionate purveyor of all things craft. Whilst at university, he took up a part-time job at famous independent Belfast off-licence, The Vineyard. It was in this fine emporium that his passion for the drinks industry was ignited and he began a voyage of self-discovery that’s spanned almost a decade…
Now a walking talking embodiment of the Powers brand motto ‘With Knowledge Comes Powers’, over the years Joe’s tasted every blend, pot still and peated variety you can think of.
So in honour of World Whiskey Day, Joe has shared his favourite Powers’ drinks recipes for World Whisky Day! There’s sure to be a few sore heads tomorrow after this…
1. Powers Neat:
Pure, simple and perfect this is the simplest way to enjoy Powers. Nothing comes between the drinker and Powers’ carefully crafted aromas and flavours.
To Serve: Simply pour Powers Gold Label into a premium quality glass, with nothing else.
2. Powers On The Rocks:
The ice chills Powers to perfection and melts slowly, gradually releasing the full spectrum of Powers’ complex flavour profile.
To Serve: Pour Powers Gold Label into a premium quality glass over ice. Ideally a single large cube, as this melts slowly.
3. Powers and Soda
An accessible mix that delivers all of the highlights of Powers’ distinctive taste and robust character.
To Serve: Add Powers Irish Whiskey to a highball glass filled with ice. Top with soda and stir briefly. Serve with a lemon twist.
4. Powers Old Fashioned
Our signature cocktail and a true whiskey classic. One of the few cocktails that is truly spirit forward.
It’s the ideal showcase for the full flavours and unique characteristics of powers.
To Serve: Place a teaspoon of sugar (or 2 sugar cubes) in an Old-Fashioned glass. Dampen with four dashes of Angostura bitters, and a splash of club soda. Muddle together. Add ice cubes and Powers Irish Whiskey. Serve with a fresh orange wheel and cherry.
5. Powers Punch
A refreshingly simple and accessible way to enjoy Powers whiskey. A versatile drink that may be more approachable for a female consumer.
To Serve: In a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine Powers Irish Whiskey with lemon juice and tea syrup. Shake well. Strain into a highball glass almost filled with ice cubes. Add the soda water, stir and garnish with a lemon slice.
6. Powers Irish Coffee
A hallmark of true Irish hospitality, Powers was the first whiskey to grace the Irish coffee. This ownable and iconic specialty perfectly showcases powers’ unique character and is suited to only
highest quality bars and restaurants.
To Serve: Whip the cream until it just starts to thicken and set aside. Dissolve sugar in two tbsp of hot water then stir in the whiskey. Pour the syrup into serving glass then add the coffee. Pour cream the on top, using the back of a spoon to prevent it sinking. Grate nutmeg over the top and serve.
