The latest addition to the superfood family is sure to surprise some people.

Fans of kale, blueberries and pomegranate have now been given a new food idol to worship in the shape of black pudding.

The blood sausage, an often controversial addition to an Ulster Fry, is being celebrated as a great source of iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium.

Other foods that are being touted to become ‘super’ in 2016 include black beans, seaweed and avocado oil.

Not wanting to be left out celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has picked his 14 ‘hero’ foods for the coming year.

They are:

1. Eggs

2. Goat’s milk (feta cheese)

3. Fish

4. Sweet potato

5. Wild greens and herbs

6. Tofu
