You’re never short of somewhere to grab a coffee in Belfast and half the time that’s the problem… deciding where to go.

So for that reason we’ve come up with a list of some of the best places to enjoy a coffee in the city as well as a recommendation of what you should order (flat whites are proving very popular!)

If you’ve any more suggestions, we’d love to hear them. Post a comment below telling us where we should be checking out and what we should be drinking.

1. Natural Ethiopian Yirgacheffe @ Root & Branch

1B Jameson Street, Ormeau Road

This striking coffee, with taste notes of Sloe Gin & Blackberry, is hitting the mark right now.

2. Filter coffee @ Town Square

45 Botanic Avenue

The baristas at Town Square took first and second place in the AeroPress Championship this year and their coffee beans won the Best In Ireland at the IBCC, so they can put forward a very strong argument for having the best filter coffee in Ireland. All their coffee is from ‘single origin’ coffee beans which they get from Roasted Brown based in County Wicklow.

3. Cortado @ 5A

5A Lockview Road, Stranmillis

5A use a blend of coffee from Bailies called Puccini to make their cortado which consists of espresso coffee mixed with a roughly equal amount of warm milk.

4. Flat White @ Boden Park Coffee Company

327 Ormeau Road

Boden Park’s flat white combines smooth velvety milk poured over the house blend from Honduras/Brazil with caramel and nutty notes.

5. Filter coffee @ Quartisan

23-27 Waring Street

It’s hard to choose a favourite at Quartisan so we’ve taken the easy option and gone for the filter coffee brought to you via the AeroPress from the award-winning baristas. They also offer filter coffee via the Chemex method of brewing.

6. Flat white @ Franklin & James

Bedford House, Bedford Street

Made with Sao Silverstre beans from Brazil, this is a natural process coffee, full bodied with dark chocolate flavours which works well in a milky drink like a flat white.

7. Affogato @ Indigo Coffee & Gelato

86 Stranmillis Road

At Indigo they’ve recently started using Five Elephant coffee from Berlin to great effect. If someone can’t decide between and coffee or a gelato they recommend a Honeycomb Affogato, a scoop of Honeycomb gelato with a double shot of coffee poured over the top.

8. Flat white @ Kaffe O

411 Ormeau Road & 73 Botanic Avenue

Kaffe O bring their unique blend of coffee all the way from Copenhagen. In fact they’re the only place outside Copenhagen you can get it. The beans from Ethiopia, Guatemala and Costa Rice are roasted and shipped from the Danish capital and work very well in a flat white, which they ensure is deliberately short (less than 6 oz) and very flat!

9. Filter Coffee @ Established

37 Talbot Street

The coffee beans change so regularly in Established that it’s hard to pick a star, but you’ll never go far wrong with the filter coffee.

10. Flat white @ The Pocket

69 University Road

The current combo of coffee and milk being used in The Pocket is roaster from 3fe along with milk from Draynes farm. They say it’s the technique of texturing that is the key to getting the flat white right.

11. Americano @ Cafe Smart

56 Belmont Road

Cafe Smart roast their own brand of the highest grade Brazilian coffee beans to bring together their finest 100% Arabica espresso coffee blend, a honey-smooth medium roast animated by bold undertones. The flavour is best expressed in an Americano or espresso

12. Latte @ Yahi

Great Northern Mall

Yahi use orang-utan coffee from Sumatra, which supports the orang-utans and farmers. Which explains why you’ll often see a hairy primate running around Europa Bus Centre. It’s hard picking a favourite, but we’ve gone for the latte.

13. Mocha @ Urban Express

Unit 4 Forsyth House, Cromac Square

The mocha using Silvio and chocolate sauce is a winner. While a lot of coffee houses use a chocolate flavoured milk with their coffee, Urban Express go for proper chocolate sauce to make it an authentic mocha.
