A proposal has been approved to install a cable car to take people up the Mourne Mountains.
When you think about it, the plan makes perfect sense – the Mournes are one of the biggest tourist attractions in Northern Ireland, but for those of us who aren’t the most mobile or of suitable fitness, the best we can do is admire them from afar.
The Donard Gondola proposal was made as part of the South-East Master Plan, a document put together by the Department for Social Development and councils in the area.
Having been approved, the next step is to identify possible location then put the project out to tender.
One possible location touted for the cable car would be from Donard Park to Millstone Quarry or Thomas Mountain Quarry.
The timescale to get the mountain gondola up and running could be five to 10 years and there could be a cafe built at the top stop on the line.
