Two American tourists have become cultural pariahs following an incident of graffiti at the Colosseum in Rome.

The two women, aged 21 and 25, who used a coin to carve their initials into a brick wall in eight-inch high letters then posed for a selfie in front of their handiwork, were arrested for ‘aggravated damage on building of historical and artistic interest’.

Their behaviour was literally Neanderthal, with their carvings reminiscent of primitive cave paintings. Did they not know the Romans were a much more civilised bunch, what with their bloodsports, slavery and crucifixion?
