Once again the news of a boyband member leaving a band has rocked the pop world as Zayn Malik leaves One Direction.
He said: “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band.”
And as 1D vow to carry on without him we check out 5 more boyband splits:
1. Take That
In 1995 superstar Robbie Williams was famously asked to leave Take That after he became increasingly difficult which was later blamed on the star’s drug use.
The band went on to complete their Nobody Else tour and had a hit single with Never Forget.
In 2001 Sean Conlon left the band after suffering a mental breakdown due to the stress of being in the group. Richie Neville also left for a number of weeks to be with his fiancee who gave birth to a premature son.
The band, including Richie, shot the video for Let’s Dance with a cardboard cut out of Sean. Later that year they finally called it a day.
In 2004 Brian McFadden left Westlife weeks before their fourth world tour. Later that year the foursome embarked on The Turnaround Tour.
The band went on to finish the tour and release swing cover Ain’t That A Kick In The Head.
4. Back Street Boys
In 2006 Kevin Richardson left the Backstreet Boys to “pursue other interests”. A statement on their official site at the time said that he departed amicably and the door was always open for him to return.
The band went on to record and release the album Unbreakable in 2007 with the hit single Inconsolable.
5. New Kids On The Block
In 2004 Jonathan Knight left the New Kids after experiencing a series of panic attacks. Shortly afterwards the remaining members disbanded.
However, in 2008 they made a comeback with the single Summertime.
