The UK’s first Ginger Pride event is set to take place next summer in Plymouth.

For once it’s an event where organisers will be hoping the weather won’t be too good.

In Breda in the Netherlands every year around 5,000 redheads get together to celebrate their colouration in a festival known as Roodharigendag (Red Hair Day).

The event in Plymouth is a tentative start to setting up something on the same scale in the UK.

As of the end of June, the dedicated event page Gingers: The Gathering has over 3,000 likes on Facebook.

At Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013 a Ginger Pride March took place led by Canadian comedian Shawn Hitchins.

The show of strength from redheads follows a warning from scientists that gingers face extinction due to climate change.
