The story of how the language barrier was broken down by a love of football right here in Northern Ireland is currently featuring in a Google Translate film.

It tells the story of Alberto Balde who was born in Spain but moved to Portadown when his mum got a job there.

The documentary about how Portadown Youth’s Gary Magee and Glen Traynor used a Google Translate app to communicate with Alberto featured as part of the Sky Sports half-time coverage during last weekend’s Manchester City v Manchester United and Liverpool v Southampton games.

It marked the UK debut broadcast of the short film which has already attracted over one million YouTube views on the Google channel since first posted just over a week ago.

The story came to the attention of Google via an article published in the Portadown Times

Alberto’s coach Gary said: “It’s amazing what a little communication can do. Everyone just loves Alberto. He’ll always be a Portadown boy – he’s one of us now.”

Having shone as a Portadown Youth player, Alberto has travelled from Portadown to England where he’s trained with several Premier League clubs.
