In the first ever free-fall abseil from Victoria Square’s iconic dome, Dame Mary Peters has abseiled 147 feet.
Brave Dame Mary – aged 75 – performed the abseil from the viewing gallery under the Dome in Victoria Square alongside Cool Fm’s Paulo Ross.
It was a challenge not for the faint hearted – but Dame Mary is arguably made of sterner stuff than most.
Indeed, the now Dame won a gold medal in the pentathlon at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, and two pentathlon gold medals at the Commonwealth Games between 1958 and 1974. As well as gold and silver for the shot put.
She heads up the Mary Peters Trust charity which raises money to fund promising young athletes from Northern Ireland.
Dame Mary’s Trust teamed up with Cool Fm and Downtown Radio’s charity Cash For Kids to raise funds by holding the newest ‘Extreme’ challenge.
Cash for Kids is Cool FM and Downtown Radio’s own charity which raises money to support disadvantaged local children living in Northern Ireland.
