It’s that time of year again. With some of the most miserable rainy days it seems summer in Belfast seems to have gone on strike.
But between that annoying drizzly rain, humid temperatures, frizzy hair and sweating make-up – it’s hard to make an outfit decision that will bring you through the deeply contrasting seasonal temperatures.
More often than not, we wake up and upon looking outside, decide to brace ourselves against the extremes of winter. Half an hour later we’ve reached maximum body temperature and inwardly condemn our silly short-sighted selves for not considering the sweltering stuffiness. Later the sun will come out. On our way home it will rain…but it will be hot. We decide to go out – we pick the cutest dress and preen ourselves to perfection – so the skies cloud over, the rain pours and temperatures will drop. Naturally.
So in a bid to prepare ourselves for any occasion, regardless of temperamental weather, we have taken style inspiration from some of the most effortlessly stylish stars around who come rain or hail never have so much as a hair out of place.
Check out some of our best celebrity-inspired looks to help you dress for Belfast’s weather:
Michelle Keegan looks effortlessly summer glamorous in this simple outfit. This dusky mac not only adds a flattering edge to Michelle’s slinky silhouette, but is the perfect length and colour for transitioning from a sophisticated dinner to a night out party-ready look. Whilst Michelle wears hers here with heels, this coat would look gorgeous when contrasted with a pair of denim jeans for a dressy daytime look.
This Sleeveless Topshop Duster, £40, provides a great alternative, adding a whole new dimension to your look while adding a degree of warmth without heating to extremes with full-length sleeves.
Meanwhile, with the cooler September nights fast approaching, this Waterfall Belted Duster, £79, also from Topshop, could bring you all the way from summer through to the winter months. Deep navy is a fantastic colour, and suits everyone, whilst the light-weight and shape of the jacket is particularly flattering for all shapes and sizes. Forget about not mixing with black – ‘blavy’ a.k.a. black and navy – is one of the most popular, and forgiving, colour combinations around during those ‘in-between’ months.
Alternatively, make like the gorgeous, ever-glamorous Olivia Palermo and layer, layer, layer! Olivia looks incredible here in a mid-length, colourful, print-heavy skirt, complete with this stylishly loosely-fitted, grey sweater tucked in and belted to accentuate her teeny waist. Make sure to add a plain aspect like Olivia when mixing prints in order to break it up and avoid looking frumpy. By choosing prints which compliment each other – like Olivia has with the pinks and purples of the skirt accentuated in the scarf, as well as accessorising with neutral colours – preferably brown and/or black as above- this will give off the effect of effortless, careless style and makes for an incredibly striking, show-stopping outfit.
It is essential with this look to define your waist in order for this to be flattering to your figure and prevent you looking bigger than you are. Heels definitely add an edge, as well as highlighting your legs and making them appear more defined.
If you have a wedding or fancy occasion to attend in these changing months why not channel Olivia with this Premium Bonded Prom Skirt in Floral Print, £75, from Asos. Like above, pair with a midriff-skimming plain white tee to accentuate your figure, or tuck a plain white, grey or even black in and add a thick belt to cinch you in at the waist. Then create a fabulous clash with this vibrant Pink Check Tasselled Scarf from River Island, £25.
Not only will this help keep you warm when the weather decides to take a turn, but both the print and texture create a fabulous clashing juxtaposition, adding instant edge to your prom-girl look. By adding a grungy thick black belt with attention-seeking buckle and black heels – this all makes for a simple yet fabulous summer look you can recycle again and again.
Asos has great midi-length skirts – ideal for dressing up and still wearing a skirt when you don’t want to be the ‘only one with their legs out.’ Like this Vero Moda Paisley Printed Midi Skirt, £22. Style up with lace-up gladiator sandals as shown above, or add chunky boots and a print jacket for some serious style points.
Or add this gorgeous Vila Hanky Hem Check Skirt, £38 ASOS. This skirt could be added to with a stylish print kimono, which would create an enviable eclectic clash with the checked skirt. Go for a base colour of black, red or beige, and whatever the colour of the rest of the print this will look gorgeous. Make sure to accessorize with care-free hair, eye-liner and boots and belt like above.
Ashley Madekwe looks seriously chic here in a menswear-inspired, tuxedo-luxe, tailored monochrome outfit – complete with tailored cigarette trousers to match.
This Asos Tailored Culotte Co-ord,£35.00, provides a great high-street alternative. Whilst it looks seriously high-fashion, it comes complete with a budget busting high-street price-tag.
This season’s popular Culotte trousers breathes fresh air into this menswear trend. This look is a great option for taking you from work to play. It is dressy yet casual, and can be easily dressed up or down by simply adding heels or swapping up with flats. Pair with black or white accessories to keep up appearances with this stylish monochrome look such as this amazing Dune Delphine Crossbody Bag in Black £59.00.
This look is so high-end and flattering, and offers just the right amount of flesh for those ‘in-between’ days and cooler nights and can take you all the way through winter for party-season too. Just add a classic red lip for added oomph.
